CJCUC Mourns the Passing of Cardinal Mejia

The Center for Jewish-Christian Understanding and Cooperation is saddened by the death of Cardinal Jorge Maria Mejia last week. The officers of CJCUC extend their sincere condolences to his friends and colleagues and to the entire Catholic community.
Cardinal Mejia played a critical role in the continuing reconciliation between the Church and the Jewish people.  As Secretary of the the Pontifical Commission for Religious Relations With the Jews beginning in 1977, he was instrumental in organizing Pope John Paul II’s visit to the Great Synagogue in Rome in 1986, which moved so many Jewish hearts and demonstrated the Pope’s warm friendship with the Jewish people.
As archivist and librarian of the Vatican libraries from 1998 until his retirement in 2003, Cardinal Mejia played an important role in preparing the archives of Pope Pius XII for scholarly examination that will shed light on the Pope’s activities during World War II. Like Pope Francis, we at CJCUC pray that these documents will be available soon.
We also note that Cardinal Mejia, was a scholar of Jewish Scriptures and he devoted many years of his life in Buenos Aires to teaching Jewish Scriptures as well as the Hebrew Language.
Cardinal Mejia was a friend of the Jewish people. May his name be a blessing for all those who knew him and were touched by his work.
